Wilbur Smit

Wilbur H. Smit 92, of Holland, Iowa, died Monday, July 1, 2013, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 5, 2013, at Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg, Iowa. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Visitation will be held Friday, July 5, 2013, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Wilbur was born March 27, 1921, in Holland, Iowa, the son of Henry H. and Grace (Meyer) Smit. Wilbur attended Grundy Center schools and graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1938. He grew up and lived in Grundy County his whole life. After high school Wilbur worked on the farm until he entered the Merchant Marines, serving from August 1945 until January 1947. On December 14, 1947, Wilbur married Sylvia Lillian Konig in Winnebago, IL. They made their home on the family farm until retiring in 1983 to the home they built in Holland. Wilbur was a member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church and over the years was a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, trustee, deacon, and elder. He later became a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg, Iowa. He enjoyed fishing, camping, tinkering and repairing things for his family and friends. He was a man that lived by the 5 F's: faith, family, friends, farming , and fishing.

Wilbur is survived by his children, Kathy Whitney and husband Jim of Janesville, Sharlyn Stewart and husband (Rev.) James of Danville, KY, Paul Smit and his wife Sharon of Grundy Center: 6 grandchildren, Jon (Erin Sikorsky) Stewart, Andrew (Rebekah) Stewart, Tom (Taylor) Stewart, Mike Smit, Scott Smit, Lori Smit; 2 great-grandchildren, Elise Stewart and Margaret Sikorsky Stewart; sister, Vernice Schmidt of Waukee, Iowa; brother, Darris Smit of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Alice Konig of Allison.

He was preceded in death by his wife Sylvia who was the love of his life for 57 years; his parents; his sister, Dorothy Schmitt.
