Wesley Willig, 85, of Eldora, died from natural causes on Sunday, May 1, 2005 at Life Care Center of Elkhorn, Nebraska. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am, Thursday, May 5, 2005 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora with Pastor David Splett officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Eldora. Visitation is from 6 to 8 pm on Wednesday at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Eldora Fire Dept., or to Wesley's family.
Wesley was born August 28, 1919 to Carl and Emma (Rutzen) Willig in rural Hubbard, Iowa. He attended Mud Swamp Country School in Hardin County completing the eighth grade. On November 2, 1941 he was united in marriage to Laura Johnson at Silver Lake Lutheran Church in Northwood, Iowa. He lived in Eldora the majority of his adult life except from 1941 to 1943 when he lived in Estherville, and the last few years in Elkhorn, Nebraska to be near his daughter, Susan.
He had been employed by Berg Creameries in Estherville and Eldora, Crosley's Farm Store, and Rook's Implement as a farm mechanic. He also worked as custodian of the Hardin County Fair Grounds and Youth Building, manager of the Town and Country Mobile Home Park, and worked for Northrup King and Farm Service prior to retiring in 1993. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora and served with the Eldora Volunteer Fire Department for 54 years.
Surviving is his daughter, Susan Willig of Omaha, Nebraska; son, Phillip Willig of Glenwood, Iowa; granddaughter, Katrina "Katy" Willig of San Diego, California; sisters, Ruth Piper of Eldora and Betty Julian of Eugene, Oregon; brothers, Dale Willig of Louisberry, Pennsylvania, Lloyd Willig of Forest City and Mayo Willig of Stockton, Illinois. Preceding him in death was his wife, Laura on September 9, 1993; his parents; infant son, Larry; sister, Mildred Travis; brothers, Glenn, Faye Lee, and Eugene "Zip" Willig.
