Wayne E. A�A�A½SmittyA�A�A½ Smith, 95 of Eldora, Iowa, passed away November 19, 2011 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at the Eldora United Methodist Church with Pastor Vicki Reece officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Eldora with Military Honors conducted by the Eldora American Legion-Walter Sayer Post #182 and V.F.W. Roll-Harless # 3974. A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home.

Wayne was born on September 28, 1916 in Jasonville, IN, the son of Daniel and Ethel Smith (Briggs). He was educated in Indiana until 4th grade when his family moved to the Ivester area. There he continued his education. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Wayne was first stationed at a coastal artillery battery in the eastern United States. He then served in the Aleutian Islands where his service was completed. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army he returned to the United States and was united in marriage to Nellie McCarty at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa on August 22, 1947. They made their home in Eldora where they raised their children.

Wayne began his career with the Iowa Department of Transportation. He then went to work for the Carnation Dairy. Wayne went into the restaurant business and owned and operated two restaurants in Eldora. He retired from the Dietary Department of the Iowa State Training School as head Dietitian in 1980.
Wayne enjoyed golf, horseback riding, motorcycle riding, card playing and dominos. Wayne enjoyed traveling with his wife Nellie in the winter months. He was a member of the Eldora American Legion and the V.F.W. He will be missed and long remembered by his friends and family.

Wayne is survived by his children Curtis (Linda) Smith of Marshalltown, IA, Corliss Smith of Eldora, IA and Greg Smith of Eldora, IA; step-daughters Loretta Rieks of Hubbard, IA and Nellie Irene Arnold of Burlington, IA; 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Nellie; brother Joseph Russell; sisters Doris Dickenson and Ruth Shore; a brother and sister in infancy and son-in-law Eugene Rieks.
