Wayne L. Cashatt, 89, of Eldora, passed away on Sunday, December 14, 2014 at the Valley View Nursing & Rehab Center in Eldora. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eldora. Burial will follow the funeral mass at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Eldora with military honors conducted by the American Legion –Walter-Sayer Post #182 and V.F.W. –Roll Harless # 3974. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral mass at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Wayne was born on October 27, 1925 in Ewing, Nebraska to his parents Fern and Verna (Borden) Cashatt. Wayne attended school in Ewing until the 10th grade; he then moved with his family to Iowa and graduated from Viola Township Consolidated School in Audubon County. After graduation Wayne entered the United States Army and served from December of 1944 until August of 1946. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army he returned to Iowa and was united in marriage Luetta Wurr in Coon Rapids, Iowa on February 5, 1947. Together they welcomed five children into their family.
Wayne worked in Omaha Nebraska for one year and then on various farms around Iowa until 1961. The family moved to Marshalltown where Wayne managed the Drive-In Theater until 1970. He then went on to work at the State Training School for 18 years, retiring in 1988.
Wayne was a long time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eldora and the Knights of Columbus. He was in the 1st Class of Permanent Deacons ordained at the Cathedral in Dubuque in November of 1978. He was also a member of the Eldora American Legion Walter–Sayer Post #182. He enjoyed fishing and playing games and cards with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lu Cashatt of Eldora; his children Gary Cashatt of Eldora, Tim (Karen) Cashatt of both Dubuque and the Philippines, and Margaret (Paul) Wagner of Cedar Rapids; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and son-in-law Don McGregor of Goshen, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents; son Stephen and his wife Sharon; daughter Cecelia; infant daughter Sheila; grandson Keith; 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
