Walter C. Mennenga, 94, of Reinbeck, passed away on Friday, June 3rd at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 8th at 11:00 AM at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Reinbeck with Pastor Troy Pepperkorn officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. The burial will follow services at the Reinbeck Cemetery with military honors performed by the Reinbeck American Legion Action Post #242 and the VFW. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Walter was born on January 12, 1922, on a farm northeast of Reinbeck to his parents Sieba & Anna (Bulthuis) Mennenga. His family later moved to a farm west of Grundy Center and later relocated back to Reinbeck, where he attended school. On April 3, 1943, Walter was united in marriage to Wilma Steffen in Louisville, KY. The couple welcomed three children into their family. He worked for a short time at Pioneer Hybrid in Reinbeck and on December 28, 1945, Walter enlisted in the United States Army where he honorably served his country for three years. After returning home, Walter began working as a custodian for the Reinbeck High School, retiring in 1984.
He was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Reinbeck and the Reinbeck American Legion Action Post #242.
Walter is survived by his children Gordon (Lynn) Mennenga of Iowa City, IA, Sandra Stark of Waterloo, IA & Gary (Kathy) Mennenga of Fairfield, ID; grandchildren Todd (Kim) Rowles, Kate (Chris) Roark, Jorden (Kristen) Rowles, Andy Mennenga & Cody Mennenga; great-grandchildren Aidan & William Roark and Emma Liger; siblings Roger & Robert Mennenga, Helen Cavanaugh and Janet Brubaker. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Wilma; brothers Henry, Charles, & Jerry Mennenga and sister Annabell Petersen.
