Wallace William Getting, 89 of Grundy Center, Iowa, died Thursday October 15, 2009, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center, Iowa.
Wallace was born on a farm in Grundy County on January 1, 1920 the son of Fred and Sarah (Diekman) Getting. On April 28, 1943 he was united in marriage to Kathryn Connell at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Grundy Center. Wallace worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 38 years. He and Kathryn were members of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Kathryn died on February 18, 1980. Wallace married Esther Bunger January 25, 1984 in Red Wing, Minnesota. The couple spent 17 years of retirement in Lake City where Wally was known as Smitty?s Campground handyman. The couple lived in Grundy Center and were members of the American Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife Esther of Grundy Center; a daughter Sharon Getting of Coral Springs, Florida; 2 sons: Curtis and his wife Tammy Getting of Waukee, Iowa and Martin and his wife Cherry Getting of Grundy Center, Iowa; a step son Allan Bunger of Nathrup, Colorado; and a step daughter: Karla Bunger of San Jose, California; 5 grandchildren: Chris, Emily, Tim, Jeff, and Jon; a step granddaughter: Jessica; a great grandson: Zander; and 3 step great grandchildren: Trent, Angie and Jr.; a sister Eunice and her husband Ivan Flater of Lake City, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Fred and Sarah Getting; his first wife Kathryn; a step-son Harlan Bunger and a sister: Marcella Hartman.
