Verna Luella Luiken, 85, of Steamboat Rock, Iowa, died Sunday, November 20, 2005, at Valley View Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora, Iowa. Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M., Wednesday, November 23, 2005, at First Baptist Church in Steamboat Rock, Iowa, with Pastor Harrison Lippert officiating. Burial will follow at Steamboat Rock Cemetery in Steamboat Rock. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the funeral service. A memorial fund has been established.
Verna was born January 20, 1920, in Steamboat Rock, Iowa, daughter of Louis and Kate (Tholen) Luiken. She attended school and graduated from the Steamboat Rock High School in 1938. Verna worked as a bookkeeper and clerk at the Eilers General Store for many years. Verna then worked as the School Secretary in Steamboat Rock from 1958 to 1968. During this time she was the business administrator for the Iowa Regular Baptist Camp in Clear Lake, Iowa. In 1968 she began working for Valley View Nursing Home in Eldora as the head night cook. She retired in 1984. Verna lived her entire life in Steamboat Rock. She was a member and a long time Sunday School Teacher at the First Baptist Church in Steamboat Rock, where she was baptized and joined the church at the age of 13. She was a member of the Steamboat Rock Boat Club for 15 years.
She is survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Louis and Kate Luiken.
