Verna Balvanz

Verna L. Balvanz, 90, of Eldora, Iowa, died Thursday, November 23, 2006, at Valley View Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Monday, November 27, 2006, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora, Iowa, with Pastor David Splett officiating. Burial will follow at the Eldora City Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, November 26, 2006, from 3:00 P.M. to

5:00 P.M. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora. A memorial fund has been established.

Verna was born December 1, 1915, at home in rural Grundy County, Iowa, the daughter of William and Rose Belle (Squires) Zeltman. On August 30, 1934, Verna was united in marriage to Russell Frank Herbert Balvanz in Owatonna, Minnesota. After their marriage, they moved to rural Eldora and started farming. Verna was a homemaker and a farmwife. She also worked as a cook at the New Providence School and the hospital in Eldora for many years. Verna and her husband Russell shared fifty-nine years of marriage together. He died on May 29, 1994.

Verna was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora, where she had been a member of the Ladies Aid as well as a church circle. She was a wonderful mother and an excellent cook.

She is survived by one daughter Joan Balvanz and her husband Marvin (Mick) of Eldora, Iowa; three sons Larry Balvanz and his wife June of New Providence, Iowa; Loran Balvanz and his wife Sharon of Eldora, Iowa; Lonnie Balvanz and his wife Rita of Eldora, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and one sister Bessie Young of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Russell; one sister; three brothers; and one granddaughter.
