Thelma Slinker, 86, of Grundy Center, Iowa passed away Sunday, April 24, 2011 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center, Iowa.
Thelma was born May 30, 1924 in rural Wellsburg, the daughter of Albert & Hilka (Tjaden) Geerdes. She graduated from Wellsburg High School and attended AIC in Davenport, Iowa. She was united in marriage to her husband Paul E. Slinker on December 17, 1945. They welcomed four children into their family. Thelma was very hardworking, a great mother and assisted her husband on the family farm. She was a very active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Grundy Center. She played hand bells with the church ringers and belonged to the church womena�(TM)s group. Thelma loved music, enjoyed all types of handcrafts and was active with her husband in the Meals-On-Wheels program.
Thelma is survived by her children Steven Slinker (Shelley Wade), Marijo (Joe) Keller, Donna (Michael) Ashcraft and Earl (Jeanette) Slinker, 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, sisters Gladys Eckhoff and Vera Ackerman and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul, infant daughter, brothers Jacob & Wayne Geerdes and sister Tilda Hook.
