October 21, 1924 — September 7, 2005

Sylvia L. Smit, 80, of Holland, Iowa, died Wednesday, September 7, 2005, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday, September 10 at the Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg, Iowa, with Pastor Todd Rempe officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center, Iowa. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday at Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg. Memorials may be directed to the Wellsburg Reformed Church.



Sylvia was born October 21, 1924, in rural Bristow, Iowa, daughter of Fredrick and Augusta (Veigts) Konig. She graduated from Allison High School in 1943. After graduation she lived in Waterloo where she worked for several years at Davidson Hardware. On December 14, 1947 she was united in marriage to Wilbur H. Smit in Winnebago, Illinois. In 1948 they made their home in rural Grundy Center where they farmed and in 1983 moved into the town of Holland.



She was a former member of Colfax Center Church and presently a member of Wellsburg Reformed Church. Sylvia was very involved in Christian education at both churches, teaching Sunday school for over 45 years and also helping with Bible school and serving as youth leader. She also served as a 4-H leader for several years. She enjoyed camping and fishing, and in earlier years gardening.



Surviving is her husband, Wilbur; daughters, Kathy (Jim) Whitney of Janesville, Iowa and Sharlyn (Rev. James L.) Stewart of Danville, Kentucky; son, Paul (Sharon) Smit of Grundy Center; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Rosemary; and brothers, Charles and Vern Konig.
