Steven Wilkey Piper, 77, of Eldora, Iowa, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2019 at Eldora Specialty Care. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2019 at the Eldora United Methodist Church. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2019 at the church. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Eldora. Memorials in may be directed to the Pine Lake Wildlife Club.
Steven was born on December 28, 1941 in Eldora to Carl and Katharine Piper. He spent his entire life in the town of Eldora. He graduated from Eldora High School in 1960. He attended four years of college. In 1970, he married Janice Jaspers. Together they had two children, Nicholas and Nanette.
He spent most of his working years in agribusiness. Working locally for Crosley Farm Store and later his own at Piper Farm Store. In semi-retirement he spent several years working for South Hardin Community Schools.
He was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, especially bowhunting and was passionate about water-fowling. He was also a very talented dog trainer. All spare time was spent in the outdoors in some form or another. His father was one of the founding members and the first acting President of the Pine Lake Wildlife Club. He was a life-long member of the Club spending many years as President himself. He was a founding member of the Pine Lake Archery Club who hosts the state archery shoot held by the Iowa Bowhunters Association of which he was also a longtime member. He also spent 30 years on the Eldora Volunteer Fire Department. He is a lifetime member of the Eldora First United Methodist Church. He spent many years coaching girls’ softball both when Nanette was young and when his granddaughter, Mariah was young. He never missed a sporting event that involved his children or grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Piper and Katharine Piper Scott, his brothers, John (Jack) Piper and wife Ruth, and David Piper and wife Sandra. He is survived by his wife Janice Piper, his son Nicholas Piper, daughter Nanette Piper Knight, and granddaughter Mariah Schurman and husband Jon, and many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.
