Sophia Hawkins, 85, of Parkersburg, Iowa, died Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at University Hospitals in Iowa City, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Saturday, April 9, 2011, at First Congregational Church, in Parkersburg, Iowa, with Pastor Brad Zinnecker. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Iowa. Visitation will be Friday, April 8, 2011, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., at First Congregational Church, in Parkersburg, Iowa. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Congregational Church, 401 3rd St., Parkersburg, Iowa 50665.
Sophia was born June 3, 1925, to John and Hattie (Vanderwerf) Boelman on a farm near Aplington, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed Church rural Wellsburg, Iowa, now St. Peter's United Church of Christ.
On December 13, 1946, Sophia was united in marriage with Carol G. Hawkins at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa They lived and farmed in Butler County, Iowa most of their married life. In 1982 they moved to Parkersburg. For many years Sophia worked at the local Parkersburg restaurants. She retired from waitressing in 2007.
Sophia was a long-time member of the First Congregational Church, Parkersburg, Iowa, and belonged to the Women's Guild and Helping Hands. Some of her many clubs included: America Legion Auxiliary, Christian Women's Club, Parkersburg Women's Club, Triple J and Dollars for Scholars. Her favorite pastime was playing cards with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carol Hawkins on August 30, 1997, her son, Gaylen in 1971, her parents, two brothers, George and Casjen Boelman and one sister, Laura Byl.
Sophia is survived by on daughter, Phyllis(Michael) Oglesby of Grundy Center, Iowa; two grandchildren, Mark Oglesby of Danbury, Iowa and Abby (Frank) Remund of Beaverton. Oregon; two great-grandchildren, Grant and Parker Remund; and several nephews and nieces.
