Shawn was born on February 15, 1970, in Cresco, IA, to Fred Don Kracht and Dixie (Tanhoff) Zalaznik of Greenville, IA. After graduating from Spencer High School in 1988, Shawn pursued a career in commercial and residential painting, eventually establishing his own paint contracting business in Spencer, IA. On February 10, 1999, he married Natalie Eilderts in Grundy Center, IA. Shawn then worked alongside his father-in-law, Bernard Eilderts, in construction before joining the Grundy County Road Department in 2006.
A devoted father and "Papa," Shawn’s greatest joy was spending time with his wife and family at their summer campsite. He cherished moments spent with close friends, fishing with his father, and pheasant hunting with his beloved four-legged companion, Stella. Shawn also took immense pride in supporting Natalie and the family’s coffee shop, Natural Grind, where his contributions were numerous and impactful.
Shawn is survived by his loving wife, Natalie (Eilderts) Kracht; mother, Dixie (Tanhoff) Zalaznik and her husband Kent, his daughter, Emerson Kracht; his step-son, Austin Appel, and wife, Kate; his step-daughter, Kaylie Appel; his grandchildren, Keith Appel (5), Peyton Appel (3), Hesston Bergman (4), and Colter Bergman (2). He is also remembered by his siblings, Tamara (Kracht) Bryant, Jay Kracht, Todd Kracht, Dana Lorenz, Tom Kracht; and step-brother Luke Zalaznik; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and extended family. Shawn shared a special bond with his daughter, Emerson, of whom he was incredibly proud. He was a loving bonus father to Austin and Kaylie, always offering them guidance and support.
Preceding him in death is his father, Fred Don Kracht.
Shawn was the epitome of a dedicated husband, always putting his family's needs above his own. His laid-back demeanor and easy-going nature made him a joy to be around, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering support will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to be part of his life.
A memorial fund has been made in Shawn's name at Greenbelt Bank.
