Roy Anton Luiken was born February 17, 1906 to Sweer Anton and Ida (Koenigsberg) Luiken on a farm in Hardin County near Steamboat Rock, IA. Roy received his education in a country school until it was destroyed by the cyclone of 1918. After that, he was schooled in Steamboat Rock, including the years he drove the horse drawn school bus. He spent his early years working as a hired hand for various farmers around the area. He was baptized on January 29, 1922 in the First Baptist Church, Steamboat Rock by the Rev. Lang. He moved his membership to the First Christian Reformed Church, Wellsburg in July of 1940.
On January 28, 1932, Roy was united in marriage to Fanny M. Wilts. Together they farmed at various locations around the Steamboat Rock and Eldora areas. They retired to Wellsburg in 1979. Fanny went home to be with her Lord in April of 1986. After that, Roy spent his winters in Arkansas and later in Missouri with his daughters and their families and spent his summers at his home in Wellsburg.
Roy enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed animals and watching farming-gardening and reading about the local news. His life took him from horse and buggy days to experiencing jet travel to Washington State. Until quite recently, Roy was blessed with excellent health all of his life.
