Roland Newby

Roland C. Newby, 89, of Steamboat Rock, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at his winter home in Weslaco, Texas from complications of COPD. A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 20, 2012, 10:30 A.M. at the Steamboat Rock Presbyterian Church with Pastor Bruce Baillie officiating. Burial will follow the funeral service at the Steamboat Rock Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 19th from 7 to 8 P.M. at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora.
Roland was born on February 15, 1922 in New Richmond, Wisconsin, the son of Samuel & Hazel (Dunn) Newby. Roland graduated from Owasa High School in 1940. He honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II and upon returning home, he attended GI farm school. On December 22, 1946, Roland was united in marriage to Oscarolia Voy. The couple welcomed 3 children. Roland and Oscarolia were married for over 40 years until her death in 1987. Roland later married Crystal Logsdon and the two were married for several years. Roland worked as a farmer and also worked for Folkerts and Eckel Construction as a carpenter.
Roland was a member of the Steamboat Rock Hoover-Eiserman American Legion Post #542, a member of the Steamboat Rock Presbyterian Church, served on the Steamboat Rock School Board and was also a member of the Iowa River Conservation and Improvement Club (Steamboat Rock Boat Club). He enjoyed sports, fishing, gardening, playing cards and wood working. He especially loved spending time with his family and friends. Roland's last wish was for everyone who smokes to quit, especially his family!
He is survived by his children Jane (Tony) Doolaard of Steamboat Rock, John (Lora) Newby of Wasilla, AK and Sam (Mary Ann) Newby of Anchorage, AK; grandchildren Jeremy (Dawn) Doolaard, Emily (Jeff) Lentzkow, Eric (Kari) Newby, Vance (Jody) Newby, Amber (Greg) Johnson & Alex (Anna) Doolaard; great-grandchildren Jacob & Caitlyn Lentzkow, Claire & Drew Johnson and Sebastian Newby and Jacob & Jonah Newby; sister Alice (Robert) Fitzgerald of Marshalltown; several nieces & nephews and special friends Luke Starr & Crystal Logsdon. Roland was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Oscarolia; brothers Gale Newby in infancy, Dale Newby and sisters Effie Harms & Twyla Winters; a niece Gloria Jean Hoveland.
