Roger H. Hawley, 85, of Grundy Center, passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 6th at 10:30 A.M. at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 5th from 5 to 7 P.M. at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home with a 7:00 P.M. Masonic Service. Burial will follow the funeral service at the Rosehill Cemetery in Grundy Center with Military Honors performed by the Grundy Center American Legion Post #349 and AMVETS 17. Memorials may be made to the family.
Roger was born on January 3, 1929, the son of George E. & Mildred B. (Mills) Hawley. He grew up in Grundy County, Iowa, where he attended school. On January 6, 1946, Roger enlisted in the United States Navy. He was stationed on the USS Barton during World War II and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on November 12, 1947 in San Diego, CA. On June 4, 1952, Roger was united in marriage to Vivian Rindels in Austin, MN. The couple welcomed 4 children into their family. He worked for Rath Packing in Waterloo and also for John Deere in quality control in Waterloo for many years.
He was a member of the Masonic Martin Lodge # 624, Consistory #25 and was a member of the El Kahir Shriners, where he served as a shrine clown. Roger was a die-hard Cubs fan and enjoyed woodworking, gardening, fishing, cribbage and playing cards.
Roger is survived by his children Steven (Rhonda) Hawley of Jacksonville, FL, David (Janet) Hawley of Elk Run Heights, IA, Nancy (Tim) Wolthoff of Grundy Center, IA & Randall (Diana) Hawley of Cedar Falls, IA; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Vivian.
