Robert George Wood, 91, formerly of Union, Iowa, died Sept. 28 at Dove Healthcare-West in Eau Claire, Wis.
He was born August 20, 1923, to Herman and Roxy Wood in Iowa Falls, Iowa. Bob idolized his father, spending his days shadowing him as he did farm work until his father's untimely death from a tragic train and truck collision in 1928. Bob's uncle, Willard Wood, was instrumental in raising Bob and he often called Willard his second dad.
Bob graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1941. On June 14, 1945, he married Delpha Graham at the Congregational Church in Eldora, Iowa. The couple farmed north of Whitten, enjoying the close-knit farming neighborhood and the local community. Their first child, Roger, was born in 1955 and died shortly after birth. Daughter, Ann, arrived in 1961, and son, David, in 1963.
Bob took great pride in growing the best field of corn possible. He particularly enjoyed feeding beef cattle and was talented at spotting a sick calf. Traveling to western states to acquire feeder cattle was one of his favorite things to do.
Bob and Delpha sold their farm in the late 1970s and moved to Union, where Bob enjoyed performing fieldwork for an area farmer and spending time at the coffee shop with friends. The couple then lived almost two years at Oak Estates Assisted Living in Conrad, where they made many new friends and appreciated the facility and its staff.
In 2009, Bob and Delpha moved to Eau Claire, Wis., to be nearer family. Delpha died shortly after. Bob built strong friendships with many of his caregivers, and he deeply appreciated what they did for him.
Bob is survived by two children who will miss him very much: Ann (Dean Lucker) of St. Paul, Minn., and Dave (Becky) and their children, Joshua and Elena, of Eau Claire, Wis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Delpha, his son, Roger, and his siblings, Walter, Glen and Margaret (Wickersham).
A visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Union Community Church, Union, Iowa. The funeral, officiated by Pastor Rick Schill, will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be private at the Eldora Cemetery. Creps Abels Funeral Home of Eldora is in charge of arrangements.
