Robert W. Thompson, 66, of Gladbrook, Iowa, died Wednesday, January 1, 2014, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital of natural causes. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday January 6, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. Burial will be private. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 5, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck, Iowa. A Masonic Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. conducted by the Masonic Coin Lodge #394 of Reinbeck. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Bob was born on June 23, 1947 in Devil's Lake, North Dakota, the son of Jens and Kathryn (Cold) Thompson. The family moved to Iowa in 1951 to live on the family farm. Bob graduated from Gladbrook High School with the Class of 1965. He then went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Iowa State University in 1970 and his Juris Doctorate from Drake Law School in 1972. Bob served in the Army National Guard from 1971to 1977 and was honorably discharged. Bob began practicing law with Mike Rickert in 1972 and opened his own law practice in 1990.

Bob was a member of the Masonic Coin Lodge # 394 in Reinbeck, Coinette Chapter # 273, the El Kahir Shrine, First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center, Grundy and Tama County Bar Association, Iowa Trial Lawyers, Iowa State Bar Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Reinbeck Theater Guild, the Sigma Nu Fraternity and the Reinbeck American Legion Action Post #242. He served on the original Community Development Corporation for Reinbeck, the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Conestoga Girl Scout Council. In 2010 Bob received the Iowa Legal Aid Volunteer Lawyer Project Award.

Bob was united in marriage to Carol Jane Reynolds on February 16, 1991 in Grundy Center, Iowa.

Bob is survived by his wife Carol of Gladbrook; his children Matt Thompson of Grundy Center, IA, Skip Foos of Gladbrook, IA, Scott Foos of Fayette, IA, Megan (Greg) Bearbower of Nebraska City, NE, Jenn Even of Marion, IA and Andre Allen of Waukee, IA; 12 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; numerous cousins; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents and several aunts and uncles.
