Robert Marvin Finger, age 81, of Steamboat Rock, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at Valley View Nursing & Rehab Center in Eldora, while under the care of Care Initiatives Hospice. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, January 20, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora. Burial will be held immediately following the funeral service at Steamboat Rock Cemetery with Military Honors being conducted by the American Legion-Walter-Sayer Post # 182 and V.F.W. Roll-Harless #3974. Visitation will be held from 3:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora.
Bob was born on December 1, 1932 in Steamboat Rock, IA, the son of Michael and Grace (Folkerts) Finger. Bob was raised and educated in Steamboat Rock and graduated from Steamboat Rock High School with the Class of 1950. He then went on to earn his Associates Degree from Ellsworth Community College in 1952. Bob served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Bob was united in marriage to Arlene Frances Barz on August 8, 1959 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Alden, IA and together they welcomed two children into their family. Bob spent his working career operating the family farm east of Steamboat Rock, from 1955 until 1993, when he retired.
Bob was a long time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora. He served on the Hardin County Conservation Board for 10 years. Bob was also a member of the Steamboat Rock American Legion, the Steamboat Rock Historical Society, as well as a charter member of the Steamboat Rock Boat Club. Additionally he assisted with the Steamboat Rock Cemetery Theater Staging. Bob enjoyed the outdoors, including gardening, fishing and trapping. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan. Bob also enjoyed canning and making maple syrup. Bob took tremendous joy in spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Bob is survived by his wife of 54 years, Arlene, of Steamboat Rock, IA; daughter Mary (Terry) Gast of Steamboat Rock, IA; son Mike (Susie) Finger of Denver, CO; grandchildren Kendal and Katie Gast and Allison, Andrea and Grace Finger; sister Louise (Russell) Karsjens of Maple, Grove, MN; sisters-in-law Lois Tidman of Eldora, IA and Violet Finger of Sapulpa, OK; many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother Nellie Karsjens Finger and brothers George and Don Finger.
