Robert William Buck, 90, of Ackley, formerly of Grundy Center, passed away on Monday, June 16th at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 20th at 10:30 A.M. at the United Methodist Church, 707 6th St., Grundy Center, IA. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 19th from 5 to 7 P.M. at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Burial will follow the luncheon at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Gladbrook. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Robert was born on December 28, 1923 in Gladbrook, IA, the son of Arthur & Ella (Hoppe) Buck. He grew up in Gladbrook, graduating with the class of 1941. After high school, Robert relocated to Minneapolis where he riveted aircraft wings and other aircraft parts for war aircraft. He then went on to work for Gettles Garage in Garwin for some time and owned and operated Buck's Welding & Repair shop in Grundy Center in the 1960's. On July 18, 1955, Robert was united in marriage to Henrietta Fink at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They welcomed son Robert Arthur into their family. Robert later started work as a carpenter, working for his cousin Lyman Peterson, where eventually he became self-employed. He retired from carpentry but continued doing repair work until he was no longer able to.
He was a member of the Grundy Center United Methodist Church, the Cedar Valley Engine Club and Antique Acres in Cedar Falls. Robert enjoyed restoring antique gas engines, attending steam engine shows, fishing and music, especially playing the accordion and harmonica.
Robert is survived by his wife of 58 years, Henrietta of Ackley; son Robert (Maria) Buck of Ackley; grandchildren Alysa Buck of Ackley, Eduardo Pena of Des Moines & Sabrina Cashner of Peabody, Kansas; sisters Carolyn Goettsch of Greer's Ferry, Arkansas & Ruth Ballard of Marshalltown, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Donna Hansen.
