Richard G. Pettigrew, 74, of Eldora, Iowa
Richard G. Pettigrew, 74, of Eldora, Iowa, died from natural causes on Tuesday, May 23, 2006, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Saturday, May 27, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church in Eldora, Iowa, with Pastor Douglas Harding officiating. Burial will follow at the Eldora City Cemetery in Eldora, with full military rites provided by the American Legion Walter-Sayer Post #182 and the V.F.W. Roll-Harless Post #3974. Visitation will be Friday, May 26, 2006, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, where the family will be present to greet friends. A memorial fund has been established.
Richard was born January 12, 1932, the son of Leslee and Clella (Nazor) Pettigrew. Richard was raised and educated in Eldora, graduating from Eldora High School in 1950. After graduation, Richard attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, for a year, before joining the United States Air Force on January 15, 1952. Richard served his country until he was honorably discharged on January 14, 1956. Upon returning from military service, Richard enrolled at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, attending there for two years. He was united in marriage to Marcia Setchell, and they had four children. They were later divorced. On August 2, 1979, Richard was united in marriage to Marilyn Biester-Thompson in Iowa Falls.
Richard worked for several years at the State Training School in Eldora, as a Cottage Supervisor. He then became a Juvenille Detention Officer for the State of Iowa, retiring in January 1994.
Richard was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Eldora, and also the Walter-Sayer Post #182 of the American Legion. He was the founder and leader of the Rhythm Tones Jazz Band, of which he had been a seventeen year member. He had also served on the Eldora Emergency Squad for many years. Richard had been an avid motorcycle rider.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn Pettigrew of Eldora, Iowa; two sons Brad Pettigrew of Austin, Texas; Stuart Pettigrew and his wife Marsha of Eldora, Iowa; two daughters Debra Meeker of Phoenix, Arizona; and Angela Pettigrew of Yankton, South Dakota; two step-daughters Teresa Merritt and her husband Dan of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Sheila Kadolph and her husband Tom of Parker, Colorado; four grandchildren- Brandon Morton, Kristel Morton, Brent Pettigrew and Mandy Pettigrew; and five step-grandchildren- Joshua Merritt, Travis Merritt, Kayleen Merritt, Jessica Wakeham, and James Kadolph; eight brothers William Farr, Jim Farr, Eugene Farr, Stan Halfpop, Larry Mitchell, Donald Farr, Robert Farr, Dennis Farr; and five sisters Lorraine Farr, Barbara Nissen Schafer, Juanita Farr, Geraldine Farr, and Judith Bradford.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
