Robert L. Dickenson, 66, of rural Union, died at his home from natural causes on Monday, November 15, 2004, while under the care of Hospice of North Iowa. Funeral services will be at 1:30 P.M., Friday, November 19, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church in Eldora, Iowa, with Pastor Douglas Harding officiating. Burial will follow in Sheppard Cemetery, rural Union, with military honors provided by Walter-Sayer Post 182 of the American Legion and Roll-Harless Post 3974 of the VFW. Visitation is from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. A memorial fund has been established. Robert was born October 16, 1938, in Gifford, Iowa, the son of Adrian Charles and Jacquelyn Jane (Wilson) Dickenson. Robert lived in the Whitten and Gifford area as a youngster and graduated from Eldora High School in 1956. He worked various jobs after high school and in 1958 he enlisted in the United States Navy. Robert served his country from February 1958 to February 1962 as a Radarman 2nd Class. On November 15, 1959, Robert was united in marriage to Iva Newby at the Gifford United Methodist Church. After their marriage they lived in the Union and Eldora areas, moving to their present home in 1967. Robert worked at Eagle Feeds with Jim Hauser from February 1962 to September 1971. He worked at Ag Supply in Eldora with Vern Greimann from September 1971 to July 1995, and Robert also worked as a truck driver at Pine Lake Lumber with Jack Rogers from February 1996 to December 2003.
Robert was a member of the Gifford United Methodist Church, a member of the Harry Crow Post #255 of the American Legion, and he was also a trustee of Sheppard Cemetery. Robert enjoyed golfing and was a member of the South Hardin Recreation Area, where he golfed a hole in one. He enjoyed bowling, and was league secretary for over twenty years, and bowled in eighteen national bowling tournaments, with seventeen of them being consecutive. Robert loved the outdoors, spending time hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed sports, and was a member of the Football Chain Gang at the Eldora-New Providence High School for many years.
He is survived by his wife Iva Dickenson of rural Union, Iowa; three sons Steven Wayne Dickenson of El Cajon, California; Jeffrey Lynn Dickenson of Vancouver, Washington; Dennis Alan Dickenson of Eldora, Iowa; one daughter Susan Kay (Dickenson) Travis and her husband Richard of Eldora, Iowa; two grandchildren Jacob and Jennifer Travis; one brother David Dickenson and his wife Joanne of Owasa, Iowa; one sister Judy Martin of Eldora, Iowa; and one sister-in-law Barb Dickenson of Gifford, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Jack Dickenson; and one brother-in-law Roger Martin.
