Richard Christensen

July 15, 1931 — February 25, 2014

Richard Dean Christensen, 82 of Eldora, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at the Eldora Nursing and Rehab Center while under Care Initiatives Hospice. The family will be receiving friends and family for lunch and a time of Christian fellowship at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, March 3, 2014 at the Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church, in New Providence, IA. The funeral service will be held at the church one hour later at 1:30 p.m. Burial will follow the funeral service at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Marshalltown, IA. Friends and family are welcome to meet at the cemetery for the committal service. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, Iowa.

Richard was born on July 15, 1931 in Geneva, IA to his parents Clarence and Helen (Kamrow) Christensen. He attended country school through the 8th grade and then went to work with his father farming for Harold Britten on the north side of Zearing and for the Sparrow's on the south side of Zearing. As a teen he met and married Viola Borton on October 7, 1951 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Richard joined the Army in 1951 and served in the Korean Conflict as jeep driver in Panama. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Iowa to help raise his daughters Betty Ann and Connie Marie.

Richard helped Darwin Vinton farm in the Beaman and Conrad area. He then went on to farm southeast of Eldora, drive school bus for the Eldora School District and drive truck for Trojan Seed Corn and then Agro Pro Seed Corn. He also helped Rick Baker hauling corn and black toping and graveling roads around the area.

Richard was baptized at the Methodist Church Zearing. He raised silver foxes, geese and various other animals. In his youth he was a champion horseshoe competitor. He loved classic country and bluegrass music and was an avid fan of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. He was currently learning to play the Dobre with his granddaughter. His true joy in life came from spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughters Betty Ann (Gary) Chrisman and Connie Marie (Kevin) Freese; granddaughters Karen Tordoff, Brandy Chrisman, Anna McAbee and Lori Freese; 9 great-grandchildren; a brother Jim Christensen and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Viola; grandson Tracy Chrisman and great-grandchildren Savannah and Donavon Tordoff.
