Ray Allen Taylor, 91, of Steamboat Rock, Iowa, went to be with his Lord Jesus Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at Valley View Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Eldora, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2015, at First Baptist Church in Eldora with Pastor Gordon Taylor officiating and Pastor Mark Chapman assisting. Burial will follow at the Jackson Township Cemetery near Owasa. A visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Ray Taylor son of Leonard and Mary (Huffman) Taylor was born June 4, 1923, near Steamboat Rock, Iowa. He graduated from Steamboat Rock High School in 1940. On February 5, 1943, he married Mary E. Allen at the First Baptist Church in Eldora. The couple resided near Steamboat Rock. Ray farmed the family farm, attended the University of Northern Iowa and Baylor University, served 6 terms in the Iowa State Senate from 1973 until retiring from office in 1995, and also was a business partner in Karol Ann's Clothing Store in Eldora.
Ray was very active in his community and within the state. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Iowans Right-to-Work, American Legislative Exchange Council, Farm Bureau, Wildlife Club and served on the board of Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, Iowa. He was a former chair of the Hardin County Bicentennial Committee, past member of the Iowa Commission on Interstate Cooperation, Iowa College Student Aid Commission, Toastmasters, Board of Adjustment for Hardin County, R.E.C. Board, state board of American Cancer Society, Iowa Boundary Commission, Confidential Records Council, and served 15 years (12 years as president) for the Steamboat Rock School Board.
Survivors include his children, Gordon (Rayna) Taylor of Carlisle, PA; Laura (Paul) Hansmann of Coon Rapids, MN; Karol (Jack) Rogers of Eldora, IA; Jean (Bob) Mahl of Anderson, IN; 11 grandchildren; and 41 great grandchildren.
Ray was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary of 64 years; his parents; and sister, Lorraine Hess.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed in his memory to Faith Baptist Bible College of Ankeny.
