Ray Diamond, 79, of Eldora, died from natural causes on Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at Valley View Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora. Following cremation memorial services will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, March 16, 2007 at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora with Chaplain James Key officiating. Burial will follow in the memorial addition of the Eldora City Cemetery with military honors provided by Walter-Sayer Post 182 of the American Legion and Roll-Harless Post 3974 of the VFW. Ray's family will gather to greet friends at the funeral home from 5 pm to 7 pm on Thursday evening.
Ray was born December 19, 1927 in Galax, Virginia, son of Otis and Viola (Hawks) Diamond. He moved with his family to New Providence as a young child and attended the New Providence School System. He later received his teaching certificate from the University of Northern Iowa. Ray served his country as a Medic with the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1946 to 1947, reaching the rank of sergeant. On August 24, 1947 Ray was united in marriage to Bertha Aswegan in Marshalltown, Iowa. Ray and Bertha lived for some time in Marshalltown and Des Moines but spent most of their married lives in Eldora. He was an entrepreneur operating Diamond's Shoe Store, the Coast to Coast Store, Diamond's DX Station, and most recently worked as a Sales Representative for Mac Tools. Ray loved to fish and took many trips to Leach Lake, Minnesota and fished the Gulf of Mexico while over-wintering in Texas. He also enjoyed woodworking and made many picture frames, and also enjoyed paint-by-number.
Surviving is his wife, Bertha of Eldora; daughter, Gail Van Lengen of Alden, Iowa and her husband, Roger; sons, Craig Diamond of Eldora, and Tony Diamond of Chicago, Illinois and his wife Kristine; sisters, Geneva Emert of Eldora, Ann Egyabroad of Marshalltown, and Juanita Hovick and her husband Ray of Ames; brother, Roy Diamond and his wife, Rada of Conrad; and by four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
