Ralph H. Reed, 86, of Steamboat Rock, Iowa, died from natural causes on Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Friday, July 15, 2005, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora, Iowa, with Pastor David Splett officiating. Burial will follow at 1:45 P.M., at the Radcliffe Cemetery in Radcliffe, Iowa. Visitation will be Thursday, July 14, 2005, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, where the family will be present to greet friends. Memorials may be directed to the family or to the Ackley-Geneva Lions Club.
Ralph was born June 2, 1919, on the home place in rural Radcliffe, Iowa, Hamilton County, the son of Earl Henry and May Josephine (Rierson) Reed. Ralph received his education in Radcliffe and graduated from high school there in 1937. On February 22, 1939, Ralph was united in marriage to Arlene Thompson at the Lutheran Church Parsonage in Radcliffe. After their marriage they lived on the home farm in rural Radcliffe. In 1956, the family moved to a farm in rural Steamboat Rock. Ralph farmed for many years, and at the same time he had worked at several other jobs as well. He had worked at the ASCS Office in Iowa Falls for some time and had also sold Mormon Feed and Dekalb Seed Corn. Ralph hauled seed corn for Northrup King for many years and had also worked for Rooks Implement in Eldora as a parts man. Ralph had worked for Ken's Repair in Ackley, which was his son Ken's business, for several years. Ralph and Arlene were also meter readers for REC for many years. Ralph received an award certificate from Henry Wallace for doing custom work for area farmers during World War II. He was a 4-H Leader for many years in Clay Township, and his family received the 4-H Family of the Year Award. Ralph was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora. His family was his life.
He is survived by his wife Arlene of Steamboat Rock, Iowa; son Kenneth Reed and his wife Linda of Ackley, Iowa; son Leslie Reed and his wife Renee of Galt, Missouri; daughter Pamela Berends and her husband Edwin of Conrad, Iowa; son Douglas Reed and his wife Treva of Spanish Fork, Utah; daughter Denise Matlage and her husband Ed of Des Moines, Iowa; daughter-in-law June Reed of Urbandale, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; two sisters Grace Frette of Webster City, Iowa; and Lois Reisetter and her husband Gene of Ames, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents Earl and May Reed; by his stepmother Emma Reed; one son Roger Reed; and one brother Ray Reed in infancy.
