Norman R. Hackney, 70, of rural Eldora, died at his home from natural causes on Thursday, April 07, 2005, while under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Monday, April 11 at the Gifford United Methodist Church in Gifford with Pastors Rick Schill and Leela Prince officiating. Burial will follow at Sheppard Cemetery. Visitation is from 3:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Memorials may be directed to Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Norman was born July 4, 1934, in Newton, Iowa, son of Rex R. and Odetha P. (Mulbrook) Hackney. Norman was a U. S. Veteran serving with the Army from 1957 to 1958, and was later recalled in 1961 serving until 1962. On January 26, 1962 he was united in marriage to Carol Abernathy in Seattle, Washington where Norman was stationed. He lived the majority of his adult life in the Gifford and Eldora area and was self employed as a trucker, hauling rock and gravel, also spreading ag-lime on area fields. He retired in the spring of 1989 for health reasons but continued working for area farmers during the planting and harvest seasons. He was a member of the Gifford United Methodist Church and enjoyed fishing and hunting mushrooms.
Surviving are Norman's sons, Scott (Jennifer) Hackney of Eldora and Mike Hackney of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; brothers, Ron Hackney and Gail (Kathleen) Hackney both from Gifford; and grandchildren, Zachary, Brittany, and Madison Hackney. Preceding him death were his parents and a brother in infancy.
