Nancy L. Hook, 81, of Grundy Center, passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at Grundy County Long Term Care in Grundy Center. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 30, 2018 at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Al Polito officiating. Burial will follow the service at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center.
Nancy Lou Tanner daughter of Roger and Mildred (Cate’) Tanner was born on September 3, 1936 in Lamar, Pennsylvania. She grew up in Lamar until her senior year when she moved with her family to Manchester, Iowa. She graduated from Manchester High School in 1954. Nancy attended Iowa State Teacher’s College (UNI) where she was awarded her teaching certificate and over the years of her teaching career earned her bachelor’s degree. On June 16, 1961, she married Roger James Hook in Grundy Center. Nancy taught 1st grade in Grundy Center for 6 years and also was a substitute in Grundy Center for 24 years until retiring after 30 years of teaching. She was a member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center where she taught Sunday School and was a former Deacon. Above all she loved spending time with her family. She loved art, nature, hiking, ice skating, travel and researching genealogy for her family and others.
Nancy is survived by her children, David (Shelly) Hook, Susanne (Mike) Carney; grandchildren, Travis Hook, Blake Hook, McKenzie Carney, Sierra Carney and Drake Carney; brother, Jerre’ Tanner of Honolulu, HI; a “French Son” Jean Claude “Coco” Matha (exchange student 40 years ago who has stayed in close touch along with many visits) and his two daughters, Romane and Lauraine. In addition to her parents, Nancy was also preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Roger Hook.
Memorials may be directed to the Bethany Presbyterian Church or the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in memory of Nancy.
