Mildred P. Miller, 85, of Eldora, died from natural causes on Monday, March 24, 2008 at Bethany Life Communities in Story City, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Friday, March 28, 2008 at the Eldora United Methodist Church in Eldora with Chaplain Sandy Anenson of Bethany Life Communities officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Eldora. Visitation is from 5 pm to 7 pm on Thursday at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Mildred Pearl Mossman Miller was born July 29, 1922 in Hubbard, Iowa. She was the oldest of five children of Thomas Orlando and Pearl Maude (Sheldon) Mossman. Mildred attended rural school at Dean School in Tipton Township and graduated from Eldora High School in 1939. She taught country school near Ackley and Iowa Falls and on August 23, 1941 Mildred was united in marriage to Myles R. Miller. They moved to Burkburnett, Texas where Myles was serving in the Army Air Force and two years later to Amarillo, Texas for two years. At the end of WWII they moved home to a farm west of Eldora. Mildred attended Ellsworth College and the University of Northern Iowa and taught upper elementary school in the Eldora-New Providence School System for over 20 years.
Her hobbies of reading, lapidary and conservation education carried over in her classes of conservation education and other interesting science units. Mildred continued her interest in rocks and minerals and belonged to the Mid Iowa Rock Club of Marshalltown for over 30 years until it disbanded. She was also a member of the Eldora United Methodist Church being active in their Sunday school classes and women's groups, the Geological Society of Iowa, Iowa State Teacher's Association, Farm Bureau of Pleasant Township, Audubon Society, and Pine Lake Wildlife Club. Mildred retired from teaching in 1985 and spent the winters in Weslaco. She remained active in Weslaco serving as a host teacher for 8th graders and quilting in a quilting group.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Myles; brother, Lawrence; sister, Muriel; and her parents. Surviving is her son, Merlin R. Miller and his wife Patricia of San Antonio, Texas; brothers, Orlan Mossman and his wife Nellie Ann and Russell Mossman and wife Joyce; brother-in-law Dean E. (Dorothy) Miller; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
