Michael Frier

February 5, 1969 — July 19, 2018

Michael Dean Frier, 49, of Colfax, Iowa formerly of Reinbeck, Iowa, passed away suddenly at his mother’s home in Reinbeck on Thursday, July 19, 2018. A memorial visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of memorial service at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck. Inurnment will be held at Reinbeck Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Reinbeck Dollars for Scholars or Colfax-Mingo Scholarship Committee.

Mike was born on February 5, 1969, to his parents Gerald and Jeanine (Zielske) Frier. He graduated from Reinbeck High School in the class of 1987. He earned his Doctorate of Veterinarian Medicine from Iowa State University in May of 1994.  He worked in various areas of our state that helped him gain knowledge that then made him successful when he opened Frier Veterinary Services in January 2005.  He really enjoyed owning his own business and working in Colfax.  Not only did Mike care for the animals, he cared for their owners and gained many friends. Mike was proud of being a Vet, although he had to retire due to injury, he still took pride in his occupation and participated in professional committees.

Mike was married to Andrea Norris on September 13, 1997. They welcomed their children Jacob and Kirsten into their family. They later divorced.

Mike was a confirmed member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Reinbeck, Iowa. In 1997, Mike purchased his first Vizsla and from there a 20+ year legacy began.  He loved researching, breeding, and training dogs.  The Frier Vizsla reputation continues with many owners returning for a second and even a third pup.  Hunting trips to South Dakota with his son were highlights of his summers.  When he was able, Mike also loved to travel to Ely, MN, to canoe into the Boundary Waters.  The solitude and loons were his joy.  Jacob was able to experience these trips with his father. In his youth Mike was a member of the Boy Scouts and attained the honored rank of Eagle Scout which is where his love the outdoors was reinforced.

Mike is survived by his children Jacob and Kirsten Frier; mother Jeanine Frier; sister Mary (Blake) Butz; former wife Andrea Frier; and several nieces & nephews.  He was preceded in death by his father Gerald and several aunts and uncles.
