Michael W. Aalfs, 63, of Gladbrook, Iowa, died on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, rural Holland, Iowa; with Pastor Larry Hoop officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 14, 2011 at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Mike was born on January 20, 1947 in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was the son of Harm and Arvilla Aalfs. Mike graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1965. He served his country in the Army Reserves from 1965 until 1971. He worked at Swift & Co. in Marshalltown for 30 years and retired in 2000 due to health reasons. Mike was united in marriage to Marlene Meyer on March 11, 1970 at Colfax Presbyterian Church in rural Holland. They welcomed two daughters, Erin and Robyn into their family.

Mike was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved to play cribbage and pepper. He also enjoyed carpentry and gardening. His real joy was raising Suffolk sheep.

Mike is survived by his wife Marlene, father Harm; daughters Erin Aalfs of Plymouth, MN (Aaron Sorensen) and Robyn Hunt of Eldora, IA (Rob Pecenka); grandson Christian Hunt; brother Terry (Deb) Aalfs of Wellsburg, IA; brother-in-law Jim (Pat) Meyer of Hampton VA; 3 nieces and 2 nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother; grandparents; grandsons Brandon and Austin Aalfs (2005); son-in-law Ron Hunt (2005) and in-laws John and Onieta Meyer.
