Meta Mae Havens, 93, of Steamboat Rock, Iowa died from natural causes on Thursday, December 25, 2008 at Ellsworth Hospital in Iowa Falls, Iowa.
Meta Mae was born January 2, 1915, in Steamboat Rock, daughter of Charles E. and Angie (Cable) Gellhorn. She was raised in Steamboat Rock graduating from the Steamboat Rock High School in 1932. Meta Mae then worked for the Steamboat Rock Elementary School as a teacher?s aide. Later she attended Hamilton?s Business School in Mason City. On August 20, 1938 she was united in marriage to Hollis Havens in Vallejo, California while Hollis was stationed in the Navy at San Diego. After Hollis retired from the Navy, Meta Mae then worked as the bookkeeper for her husband business. She always had a large garden in the summer and enjoyed fishing and picnicking with the family. Family was a high priority for Meta Mae. She was a member of the Steamboat Rock Baptist Church where she was a member of the Dorcas Society. She was also a member of the Hoover ? Eiserman Post # 542 Legion Auxiliary, the Republican Women, and supported their children in the Band Boosters.
Surviving are her children, Larry and Barbara Havens of Steamboat Rock, Charlotte and Les Farago of Afton, Minnesota, Janet and Terry Folkerts of Klemme, and Robert and Barb Havens of Cedar Falls; eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Hollis; sister, Verna Karsjens, a grandson, Shane Havens, and two infant grandchildren.
