Meta A. Balvanz, 91, of Iowa Falls, formerly of Eldora, Iowa died on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora with Pastor David Splett officiating. Burial will follow at the Eldora City Cemetery. Visitation will be at St. Paul Lutheran Church from 5pm to 7pm on Friday. Meta Alvina Martha Balvanz was born July 19, 1922 at the family home south-west of Eldora, the daughter of Frank C. and Minnie Balvanz. She was baptized into the Christian faith on August 13, 1922 and confirmed that faith on May 3, 1936 at St. Paul Lutheran Church where she remained a life-long member.
She received her education at Pleasant Center School, Eldora High School Class of 1939, Ellsworth College and Pitze's School of Cosmetology. She owned and operated Meta's Beauty Shop in Eldora for 23 years and served as secretary of St. Paul Lutheran Church for 27 years.
She was active in community affairs as a member of the Eldora Business and Professional Women and sang in their sextet; Women's Club, Literature Club, first secretary of Eldora Hospital Auxiliary, directed the Hardin County Girl's 4-H Chorus, directed and was treasurer of Fellowship Meals for 30 years, secretary-treasurer of Community Older Adults Transportation System (C.O.A.T.S.) for 30 years, building committee of Dorothy's Senior Center, Secretary-Treasurer of Eldora Community Betterment Council, United Fund Board and Cecilians. She also served as Secretary and Lamplighter for Aid Association for Lutherans and was a Thrivent Board member.
She served her Lord and His Church as a youth Counselor, Junior Choir director, assistant organist, Study Guild, Lady's Aid, Sunday school and Bible class teacher and treasurer of International Walther League Convention of 1956.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers John and Ted Balvanz; sister, Margaret Bruns; brother-in-law, Victor Bruns; sister-in-law, Meryl Balvanz; nephew, David Balvanz; and great-nephew, James Larsen.
She is survived by a nephew, Marlyn Balvanz of Iowa Falls and his wife Linda; nieces, Barbara Roberts and her husband Don of Ackley, Karen Heitland and her husband Gordon of Iowa Falls and Judith Scaturro and her husband Domonic of Bartlett, Illinois; and by 12 great nephews and nieces, 14 great-great nephews and nieces, and 2 great-great-great nieces.
