Mercedes C. Baker, 91, of Union, Iowa, formerly of Eldora, died at her home on Wednesday, June 08, 2005. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am on Monday, June 13 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eldora with Father James Dubert officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 pm at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Ogden. Visitation is from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora with Rosary services beginning at 6:00 pm. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.
Mercedes was born June 15, 1913 in Ogden, Iowa, daughter of August and Lillie (Christenson) Vaughan. She was raised in Ogden where she lived the majority of her life, graduating from the Ogden High School in 1931. On April 11, 1932 she was united in marriage to Andrew Baker at St. John's Catholic Church in Ogden. She moved to Eldora in 1991 and has lived in Union since 1995. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eldora and a former member of St. John's Catholic Church in Ogden. She enjoyed doing needlepoint and worked out of her home as a seamstress.
Surviving are her children, David (Madonna) Baker of Glendale, Wisconsin, Norma Maguire of Redding, California, Gerald Baker of Seattle, Washington, Jeanette Vermillion of Missoula, Montana, Mary (Thomas) Pieper of Union, and Elaine (Jon) Kemmerer of Ely, Iowa; sisters, Ruth Johnson of Wesley, Iowa, Anna Carlson of Ogden, Dorothy (Roger) Clause of Grand Junction, Iowa, and Agnes Lowe of Des Moines; and by 17 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death was her husband, Andrew on December 11, 1996; her parents; daughter, Ann Marie; grandson, Justin Baker; sisters, Mary Vaughan, Rose McLain, Deloris Carey and Luella Earll; and brother, Leonard Vaughan.
