Melvin Meester, 77, of Grundy Center, died from natural causes on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday, September 3, 2005 at Pleasant Valley Reformed Church near Fern, Iowa with Pastor Russell Muilenburg officiating. Burial will be at 12:00 PM, following lunch at the church, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Melvin was born December 7, 1927, in Marshalltown, Iowa, son of Henry H. and Grace Ann (Meyer) Meester. He attended country school and help his father on the farm. On March 26, 1954, he was united in marriage to Merla Jane Krull at the Bristow Reformed Church and they made there home near Holland, Iowa where Melvin farmed for forty years. After retiring from the farm and moving to Parkersburg in 1993, Melvin started working at the Ackley Canning Factory. He moved to Grundy Center in 1997 and a year later suffered a stroke forcing him to retire from the canning factory.
He was a member of Pleasant Valley Reformed Church. Melvin enjoyed working on the farm, fishing, attending his grandchildren's athletic events, and for the past eight years enjoyed participating in the Senior Citizens Lunches at the Grundy Center Community Center.
Surviving is his wife, Merla; children, Patricia (Larry) Harms of Ackley, Myron (Rose) Meester of Holland, David (Ann) Meester of Fresno, California, and Kevin (Natalie) Meester of Grundy Center; sisters, Johanna (Cornelius) Schmitt of Dike and Viola (Herbert) Johnson of Parkersburg; brother, Harlyn (Edna) Meester of Grundy Center; and by ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents; grandson, Jacob Meester; and sisters, Trena Matilda Schmitt and Marilyn Meester.
