Maxine Volberding, 92, of Dike, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at the Western Home in Cedar Falls, Iowa while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at Fredsville Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa, due to construction at Dike United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Dike. A memorial visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday July 20, 2015 at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Dike Chapel, 680 Main St. in Dike, Memorials may be directed to the Dike United Methodist Church or the Dike Volunteer Fire Department.
Maxine was born on May 7, 1923 in St. Joseph Missouri, to her parents Edward & Clara (Yoesel) Vogel. She was raised in Blockton, IA and graduated from Clearfield High School in the Class of 1940. She then moved with her family to Grundy County and for 2 years attended Iowa State Teachers College. She taught elementary school for several years, until she was united in marriage to John Volberding on June 16, 1952 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Together they made Dike their home and welcomed their daughter Beth into their family.
Maxine was a 60 year active member of both the Dike United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved music and was very proud of being a member in her church choir. Her true joy in life came from spending time with her family, especially her granddaughters.
Maxine is survived by her daughter Beth (Mark) Sinnwell of Waterloo; granddaughters Bailey and Alissa and her nephew Jon (Sydney) Vogel of Arvada CO. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband John Volberding and brother Norman Vogel.
