Maxine Holmes, 93, of Eldora, died from natural causes on Monday, March 13, 2006 at Valley View Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am, Thursday, March 16, 2006 at the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock with Pastor Bruce Baillie officiating. Burial will follow in the Steamboat Rock Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the services.
Maxine was born September 26, 1912, in Rhodes, Iowa, daughter of Melvin and Grace (Bartine) Baker. She moved to Steamboat Rock as a young girl and graduated from the Steamboat Rock High School in 1927. She attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls graduating with a two year degree in 1931. She later received her BA in 1967.
On June 11, 1938 Maxine was united in marriage to Russell Holmes. She worked in her husband's drug store in Steamboat Rock for a period of time and taught school in the Steamboat Rock and Eldora school systems retiring in 1978. After retirement she worked at the Eldora Public Library until the early 90s and was considered their poetry expert. Maxine has lived at Valley View Nursing and Rehab for the past seven years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock.
Surviving is her son, Dennis of La Verne, Iowa; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Jennifer Wessels and her children Elizabeth and Megan, James Holmes and his son Hunter, and Joan Muhs and daughter Haley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell in January 1986; her parents; sisters, Miriam, Meredith, and Helen; brother, Robert; and daughter-in-law, Barbara.
