Mary Louise Rubow of Eldora, died Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa at the age of 86. She was born January 13, 1930 in Valley Junction, Iowa, daughter of Vernon and Frances Hicks. Mary grew up in state parks as her father served as Park Ranger first at Lake Ahquabi State Park, Indianola, then Backbone State Park, Dundee and finally Pine Lake State Park in Eldora. Her lifelong passion for the outdoors, animals and preserving state parks resonated throughout her life. She loved to share the story of riding her pony to country school while they were located at Lake Ahquabi. She attended the Iowa State Teachers College and started her first teaching position in a one room country school located between Eldora and Hubbard. She taught school for 6 ½ years. On June 22, 1951 she married Richard (Dick) J. Rubow in Eldora. He preceded her in death on October 10, 1982. After her three children were born, Margie, Ted and Dave, she entered the retail business, working for June Butler in her clothing store - The Carousel. Then an opportunity came along to work with longtime family friend Keith Van Patter in the Recorders office. In January of 1995, Mary retired as Deputy County Recorder where she served the residents of Hardin County for more than 25 years.
She is survived by three children, David G. Rubow of Eldora, Theodore (Ted) A. Rubow and wife Deb of Rogers, Arkansas and Mary (Margie) M. Cochrane and husband Ed of Cave Creek, Arizona. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Jake (Shannon) Rubow of Kalispell, Montana, Kara Rubow, Rogers, Arkansas and Dillon and Luke Rubow of Eldora and one great grandchild due in August to Jake and Shannon Rubow. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Ohnesorge and brother, Dale Hoestler.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, with Pastor Corey Larson officiating. Visitation will begin on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be held at a later date at Eastlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Eldora.
