March 26, 1929 — July 3, 2012

Mary Jans, 83, of Reinbeck, passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center. A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 6, 2012, 10:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church in Reinbeck. Visitation will be on Thursday, July 5, 2012 from 5 to 7 P.M. at the French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck. Burial will follow funeral services at the Reinbeck Cemetery.

Mary was born on March 26, 1929 in Cedar Falls, the daughter of Fred & Naomi (Stubbs) Roberts. She grew up in Dike where she attended school, graduating from Dike High School. After high school, she attended the Iowa State Teachers College, earning her two year teaching degree. She began her teaching career in Morrison and also taught at Union High School. On July 23, 1950, Mary was united in marriage to Melvin Dean Jans in Dike. The couple welcomed 5 children.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Reinbeck, held many offices in the church, taught Sunday School, was a member of the United Methodist Women's group, helped start the church's mission workshop, started the recycling greeting card project, helped organize the Girl Scouts in Reinbeck, was a Cub Scout Mother and was a Charter member of the Grundy County Museum in Morrison. Mary enjoyed genealogy, sewing, reading, knitting and had a love for flowers. She especially loved spending the holidays with her family and held an annual open house for the 4th of July and loved getting together with her family for Christmas, baking homemade cookies and ice cream, making soup, chili and French toast.

Mary is survived by her children Meridean (Bud) Schmidt of Cottage Grove, MN, Marilyn Jans of Stillwater, MN, Jean Janssen Combs (Bruce) of Banner, IL, Michael (Lora) Jans of Reinbeck, IA and Kenneth (Michelle) Jans of Maxwell, IA; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; sister Helen Eilers Hoffer of Cedar Falls; sister-in-law Doris Roberts and brother-in-law Jerry Butler. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Melvin; sisters Alice Hernandez and Carol Butler and brother George Roberts.
