Marvin H. R. "Mick" Balvanz, 89, of Eldora, Iowa, died on Monday, January 6, 2014 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 11 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora with Pastor David Splett officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Eldora with military Honors provided by Walter-Sayer Post 182 of the American Legion and Roll-Harless 3974 of the VFW. Mick was born December 26, 1924 near Eldora, son of Frank and Hattie (Lettow) Balvanz. He graduated from Eldora High School in 1943 then served in the Marine Corps from 1944 to 1946. Mick served in the Pacific Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star. On November 7, 1953 he was united in marriage to Joan Joyce Balvanz and they made their home and farmed south-west of Eldora.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and Walter-Sayer Post 182 of the American Legion, and in his younger years enjoyed go-karting and playing darts in the church league.
Surviving is his daughter, Marjorie Smith of Ames and her companion Webster Wilke; son, Mark Balvanz of Eldora; sister, Jan Bradford of Bakersfield, California; grandchildren, Ketra Smith, Porshia (Paul) Perkins, Kelsey Balvanz and Shea Balvanz; and by great-grandchildren, Breshay Smith, Delaney Smith-White, Bela Perkins and Noam Perkins; sisters-in-law, Mary, Ruth, and Doris Balvanz; and brothers-in-law, Larry (June) Balvanz of New Providence, Loran (Sharon) Balvanz of Eldora and Lonnie (Rita) Balvanz of Eldora. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joan on August 30, 2012; brothers, Bob, Harold, Don and Kenny Balvanz; sisters, Irene Ziesman, Viola German and Betty Roll; sister-in-law, Ellen Balvanz; and nephew, John Mickelberry.
