Marlys A. Vanderwerf, 78, of Wellsburg, died from natural causes on Saturday, July 29, 2006 at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Tuesday, August 1 at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, rural Wellsburg, with Pastor Harold Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 5 pm to 8 pm on Monday at Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg.
Marlys was born September 23, 1927, in rural Wellsburg, Iowa, daughter of Louis and Ellen (Rieken) Riebkes. She attended country school, German #5, and has lived in the Wellsburg area her entire life. On September 25, 1947 Marlys was united in marriage to Frederick A. Vanderwerf and they farmed in rural Wellsburg. She was an active member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ and was involved as a teacher and wherever else she could. She was also a former 4-H leader. She enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens, cross-stitching, and playing piano.
She is survived by her husband, Frederick; daughters, Pauline and her husband Richard Vogel of Wellsburg, Sandra and her husband Karl Harken of Aplington, Debbie and her husband Kendall Ringena of Wellsburg; grandchildren, Derek Harken and his wife Jessie, Nathan Vogel and his wife Lindsay, Travis Ringena, and Allison Ringena. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son, Ivan Dale.
