Marlys A. Saylor, 91, of Grundy Center, Iowa, formerly of Mallard Point in Cedar Falls, died Sunday, September 4, 2005, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center. Following cremation, Memorial Services will be 11:00 A.M., Thursday, September 8, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church in Reinbeck, with Pastor Randy McGrady-Beach officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or to the First Presbyterian Church in Reinbeck. French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck is serving the family of Marlys A. Saylor.
Marlys was born June 16, 1914, at home on the farm in rural Grundy County, Iowa, the daughter of Peter and Henrietta (Cook) Petersen. She graduated from the Orange Township High School. In 1937, Marlys was united in marriage to Melvin William Simonsen at her family home in Orange Township. They farmed Belmont Stock Farms east of Reinbeck until Melvin died in 1966. In 1968 Marlys married John Finlay and lived at Belmont Stock Farms. He died in 1979. In 1995 she married Frank Clement Saylor. They lived in Mesa, Arizona and more recently, Mallard Point in Cedar Falls. He died in December 2004. Marlys was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Reinbeck, and had also been a fifty-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and she loved to travel. Marlys had a special way of touching the lives of those who came to know her.
She is survived by her daughter Kay Graham and her husband Paul of Grundy Center; seven grandchildren Jeff Graham and his wife Sherri of Allen, Texas; Jerry Graham and his wife Kelly of Allen, Texas; James Graham of Anaheim, California; John Graham of Santa Ana, California; Mechele Dorsey and her husband Ron of Austin, Texas; Renae George and Troy Simonsen; thirteen great-grandchildren Tyson Graham, Corey Graham, Jarrett Graham, Samantha Graham, Tyler Graham, Jordyn Graham, Grant Dorsey, Jamison Dorsey, Logan Dorsey, Tara Walker, Cree Walker, Troy George, and Shelby Simonsen; one niece Jill Bennett of Anna, Texas; one brother-in-law Floyd Davis of Richardson, Texas; and one daughter-in-law Judy Simonsen of Austin, Texas;
She was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands; her son Jack Simonsen; and her only sister, Elizabeth Davis.
