Mabel was born on December 13, 1926 in Sibley, Iowa to her parents Paul & Martha (Harms) Frieling. When Mabel was 6 years old she and her family moved to Holland and then to Parkersburg where she graduated the 8th grade. She then worked the family farm alongside her father until she was united in marriage to her husband George Viet on March 7, 1945 at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church parsonage. Together they welcomed their daughter Diane into their family on December 19, 1948. George and Mabel worked the family farm in Beaver Township for 47 years; they then retired to Grundy Center in 1993.

Mabel was a long-time member of the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church, where she served the church as a member of the Ladies Guild, taught Bible school and was a youth group leader alongside her husband George. She was fond of sewing and crocheting. She enjoyed and was a very talented floral arranger. Mabel was an awesome baker, she was especially known for her cinnamon rolls and pies. George and Mabel enjoyed camping in Clear Lake with their grandchildren. While in Clear Lake they enjoyed visiting the local garage sales to find “treasures.” They also enjoyed visiting flea markets and playing cards with family and friends. George and Mabel loved to travel together, and were proud to say they visited all 50 States. Her true joy in life came from spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
