Lucy G. Abels, 88, of Holland, Iowa, died from natural causes on Thursday, November 30, 2006 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center. Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm on Saturday, December 2 at the First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Daniel C. Graham officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Visitation is from 6 pm to 8 pm on Friday at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center.
Lucy was born February 18, 1918 in rural Holland, Iowa, daughter of Renko and Henrietta (Mammen) Schmidt. She attended country school, Colfax #8, and then graduated from Grundy Center High School receiving her teaching certificate. On January 19, 1947 Lucy was united in marriage to Henry A. Abels at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church. Lucy taught in several country schools before working at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital housekeeping department from the mid 1970s to the early 1980s. She was a lifelong resident of Holland but due to failing health moved to the Ackley Presbyterian Village in Ackley in January 2003, then to the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in June 2005. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she had served as deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher, and served with her women?s circle. She was also active with the Holland Senior Citizens group. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, reading, crafting, and especially enjoyed her grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Bob Abels and his wife, Pat of Holland, Jean Abels of Rochester, Minnesota, Fred Abels and his wife Vicki of Holland; sisters, Anna Werkman of Holland, Margaret VanDeest and her husband, Herbert from Grundy Center, Esther Freese and her husband, Chris of Dike, and Irene Schmidt of Grundy Center; brother, Carl Schmidt and his wife Leola of Grundy Center; grandchildren, Scott and Stephanie Abels, Amanda and Matt Aswegan, Steven and Chris Lage, Ross and Wendy Lage, Lynda and Vernon Johnson, Matira Balsley, and Matthew Balsley; twelve great grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews. Lucy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry in February 1974; her son, Paul Abels; brother, Renko Schmidt; and sister, Martha Schmidt.
