Louise B. Ross, 89, of Wellsburg, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center, Iowa. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Saturday, December 13, 2008, at the Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg, with Pastor Todd Rempe officiating. Burial will follow at Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg. Visitation will be Friday, December 12, 2008, from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., and also on Saturday, from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., at Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg. The family will be present on Friday evening to greet friends. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Louise Bertha (Schmidt) Ross was born on December 14, 1918, in Stout, Iowa, the daughter of Richard F. and Vina R. (Kalkwarf) Schmidt. She was raised and educated in the Wellsburg School System. Louise was a member of the 1938-1939 Wellsburg Girls State Championship Basketball Team. She graduated from Wellsburg High School with the Class of 1939. On March 12, 1941, Louise was united in marriage to Donald W. Ross in Wellsburg. While Don was in the service Louise lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania until 1945. Louise worked as a grocery store clerk at both Sentmans and Lindaman’s Grocery Store in Wellsburg. She also worked as a waitress at the Hempmill in Grundy Center, at Plastronics in Grundy Center, and also sold Tupperware. In 1967 Louise and her husband Donald became the owners of the Pub in Wellsburg. They ran the business until Donald retired in 1981. Louise’s husband Donald died on August 18, 1999, and she continued to make Wellsburg her home until 2002, when she moved to Arlington Place in Grundy Center. From there, she moved to the Grundy Care Center in 2004. Louise was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church, and a member of the Dime-A-Time Ladies Group in Wellsburg. She was a wonderful cook and baker. Louise loved spending time with her family, especially when they were able to come for Sunday dinner. Louise would have celebrated her 90

She is survived by her daughter, Ioleta Blakely of Omaha, Nebraska; two sons, Ronn Ross and his wife Kathy of Grundy Center, Iowa; Bill Ross and his wife Claudia of Des Moines, Iowa; twelve grandchildren, Kris Metzler (Todd), Roni Hulne´, Amy Kroeger, Ryan Ross (Christi), Kerri Lynch (Jay), Kassi Nelson (Joe), Whitney Ross, Brody Ross, Bret Engelkes (Dani), David Engelkes (Becky), Kelly Engelkes, and Lindsey Engelkes; eight great-grandchildren, Paige Hulne´, Kathryn Ross, Elizabeth Ross, Ryder Ross, Karlee Lynch, Emma Engelkes, Mikayla Kroeger, and Dylan Kroeger; two sisters, Elaine Lindaman of Mesa, Arizona; Nadine Railsback and her husband Guy of Whittier, California; one brother, Richard Schmidt and his wife Mary of Iowa City, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Donald; one daughter, Melissa Engelkes; one brother, Bill Schmidt; and one sister, Betty Senning.
