Louisa Havens, age 96, of Steamboat Rock, Iowa passed away on Friday, January 17, 2014 at Valley View Nursing & Rehab Center in Eldora, while under Care Initiatives Hospice. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock, Iowa. Burial will follow the funeral service at Steamboat Rock Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Monday, January 20, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Louisa was born on March 11, 1917 in Abbott, Iowa, the daughter of William and Bertha (Geerdes) Berends. She graduated from Steamboat Rock High School with the Class of 1934. She was united in marriage to Eldon Havens on June 12, 1940 in Missouri; together they welcomed four children into their family. As well as taking care of her family, Louisa worked for 11 years at Valley View Nursing & Rehab Center in the laundry department and for 10 years at the Infant Seat Company in Eldora on the assembly line.
Louisa was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock. She enjoyed reading, embroidery and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Louisa loved all animals but was very fond of watching birds at her bird feeder. Her true joy in life came from visiting with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; she would always have a kind word and a cup of tea ready for them.
Louisa is survived by her children, Ron (Joan) Havens of Steamboat Rock, IA, Beverly (Lee) Pieters of Steamboat Rock, IA, Shirley (Larry) Crawford of Rio Rancho, NM and Barb Havens of Steamboat Rock, IA; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Eldon; sister Minnie Luiken and brother Edward Berends.
