Lola M. Callaway, 93, of Steamboat Rock, Iowa died on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at Valley View Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora, Iowa while under the care of Iowa Hospice. Following private family graveside services at the Steamboat Rock Cemetery, a memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at the First Baptist Church of Eldora with Pastor Mark Chapman officiating. There will be no public visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Eldora First Baptist Church or Iowa Hospice.
Lola was born May 1, 1918 in rural Grundy County, daughter of Harry and Lela (Baasch) Heltibridle. She graduated from the Grundy Center High School with the class of 1936. On February 14, 1939 Lola was united in marriage to Glen E. Callaway at her parent's home in Grundy County. She was a homemaker but also had worked for some time at Knight's Locker in Steamboat Rock and ran the Steamboat Cafe with her husband, Glen. Lola also did some housekeeping for others.
She was a former member of Alice Church of God of rural Conrad, and since 1947 has been a member of the First Baptist Church of Eldora. Lola enjoyed collecting salt and pepper shakers and stamps; and also enjoyed working puzzles. She adored her grandkids that in her eyes could do no wrong.
Lola is survived by her son, Robert and his wife Nancy of Eldora; Daughter-in-law, Judy Callaway of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Chris Callaway and his wife Alyssa of Clear Lake, Cathy Callaway of Des Moines, and Carey Callaway of Des Moines; great-grandson Lewis Callaway; sister, Irene Naumann of Eldora; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Callaway of Conrad and Maris Byrnes of Grundy Center; and by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glen on September 15, 2007; her oldest son Eugene D. Callaway; brothers, Dwight and Lyle Heltibridle; sister, Thelma McCall; and brother-in-law, Dale Callaway.
