Lois Abels

January 5, 1921 — September 7, 2010

Lois T. Abels, 89, of Grundy Center, passed away on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit while under the care of the Cedar Valley Hospice. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, September 10 th , 2010 at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center with Pastors Tom Bower and Jean Bower officiating. Burial will follow funeral services at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 9 th from 5 to 7 pm at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center.





Lois was born on January 5, 1921 in Colfax Township, the daughter of H.O. (Ford) & Jennie Weseman Dirks. She attended school in Holland and Grundy Center, graduating from Marshalltown High School in 1939. She later attended the Iowa State Teachers College and taught rural school in Palermo Township for 2 years. On July 10 th , 1942, Lois married Albertus Harrenstein. Bert was drafted into the Air Force during WWII and was killed in action on November 5 th , 1943. On June 12 th , 1946, Lois married Harold E. Abels. They farmed many years in Palermo Township, Grundy County. In 1980, they retired and moved to Grundy Center. Harold passed away in 1997.







Lois also attended Gates Business College in Waterloo and worked at the Farmers Savings Bank. She later worked at the Grundy County ASCS Office for 12 years.



She was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center since 1943, having served as Deacon and a member of Bethany Presbyterian Women’s Association.






Lois is survived by her daughter Carol Jeanine (Alvin) Miller of Grundy Center; niece Lynn Lea Schaa (Steve) Smith of Lebanon, MO and their two sons Brandon & Cody (Lynn joined the family at age 5); brother Kenneth (Sue) Dirks; sisters-in-law Hildegarde Dirks and Leola Abels; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands Albertus Harrenstein and Harold E. Abels.
