LeRoy Dew

February 3, 1918 — July 28, 2014

LeRoy Elwood Dew, 96 of Grundy Center, died July 28, 2014 at Grundy County Memorial Hospital, in Grundy Center. LeRoy was born February 3, 1918 to Glenn and Caroline (Ellison) Dew in rural Tama County.

LeRoy graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1936. On March 14, 1942, he married Nadine Norris, in Morrison. As the two of them began life together, they lived in several area locations, but always called Grundy County home. To this union, seven children were born.

LeRoy had dirt in his veins; he farmed up until his retirement at age 66. However, retirement wasn't for him, and he continued to do farm work up until the age of 90. LeRoy was a hard worker, and you never doubted his word, he was a fair man, and was always willing to help when called upon. LeRoy had a large raspberry patch he was especially proud of, and he could be seen around town peddling raspberries. LeRoy was a member of the St Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church in Traer, Farm Bureau, and the Friday Afternoon Pepper Club card group. He was also very active with the Grundy Center Senior Center, often times coordinating meals. LeRoy was awarded a Governor's Volunteer Award from the Hawkeye Valley Area on Agency for his work with Meals-on-Wheels.

In his free time, LeRoy liked to work jigsaw puzzles, play cards, and read Westerns, amassing several collections from various authors. LeRoy loved polka music, and it was known that on the way to church on Sunday morning, you had to listen to polka music, because after all, it was his car.

Left to cherish his memory are his children; Ronald Dew, Joanne (Mike) Potter, Roland (Connie) Dew, Janice (Eric) Heltibridle, Jerald Dew, and Janeen (Steve) Ralston; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren and his sister-in-law Mary Dew. LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents, wife Nadine, infant daughter Mary Ellen, granddaughter Lynsee Potter, and brothers Robert and Kenneth.

Services will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, August 1, 2014, and Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, 509 4th St, Grundy Center. Visitation will take place from 5:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Maple Hill Cemetery in Gladbrook.
