Leonard "Duke" Nordyke, 69, of Eldora, died from natural causes on Saturday, January 22, 2005 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Funeral services will be at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, January 25 at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora with Pastor Mary Stonebraker officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Eldora. Visitation is from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday at the funeral home.
Leonard was born June 3, 1935 in McIntire, Iowa, son of Jesse Elias and Rhoda Marie (Doane) Nordyke, and was raised in Osage. On June 20, 1969 he was united in marriage to Hazel Ann Blandau in Elk Point, South Dakota. They resided in Eldora their entire married lives except for winters spent in Alamo, Texas.
Leonard worked at the Lawn Hill Elevator (now called Prairie Land Coop) for thirty years. In his retirement he worked for the coop during the harvest season and helped mow the South Hardin Recreation Area in Union. He was a handyman and woodworker and made many lawn ornaments for family and friends. Duke enjoyed having his morning coffee with friends at the Weathered Wheel in Eldora and also enjoyed making occasional trips to the casino in Tama.
Surviving Leonard is his wife, Hazel; daughters, Beverly Nordyke of Boone, Regina (Lynn) Albee of Iowa Falls, Vickie (Don) Paul of Eldora, and Jill (Ray) Johnson of Pasadena, Texas; son, Mike (Connie) Blandau of Eldora; sisters, Neva Whitmore and her special friend Chuck Moore of Osage, Zola (Reuben) Borchardt of Plymouth, and Darla Burrett of Peoria, Illinois; sister-in-law, Rosemary Nordyke of Des Moines; and by twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Preceding him in death was his parents; son, Leonard Scott; brothers, Mervin and Donald, and an infant brother; and grandsons, Derek Sanders and Tanner Ackerson.
